Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, October 22. Michael Wardian broke the course record in winning the Tussey Mountainback 50 Mile Run, which served as the USATF National Championship. Connie Gardner was the women’s winner. There were 114 finishers within the race’s 12-hour time limit.
The event was marred by the death of a runner in the accompanying relay race. Ed Thompson of Boalsburg, Pennsylvania died of an apparent heart attack while running the eighth leg of the relay.
