The third weekend of April featured 59 races on UltraRunning Magazine’s North American race calendar. In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we check in on race results from Pennsylvania, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Arkansas and Arizona. Congratulations to everyone who raced this weekend. Hyner Trail Challenge
We kick things off in Hyner, Pennsylvania, for the 20th annual Hyner View Trail Challenge. This year’s 50k race saw an impressive 162 runners complete the course, paced by women’s winner Deanna Doanne, who set a new course record of 4:54:44. Doanne became the first woman to finish the challenging race in under 5 hours and placed seventh overall. Jill Dennes ran to a second-place finish in 5:17:40. Niki Cochran (5:27:39) came in third.
On the men’s side, Ben Quatromoni added a second Hyner Trail Challenge win (2024) to his impressive resume, breaking the tape in 4:24:27. Jesse Irwin (4:28:25) took second, and Anthony Jacobs (4:28:58) finished just behind in third.

Puerto Vallarta Mexico by UTMB
Our next race takes us south of the border to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, for the Puerto Vallarta México by UTMB. Postponed from March, the race returned for its second running after a hiatus in 2025. The 2026 edition of the 81k Hikuri race had 149 finishers out of 171 starters. First place in the men’s division went to Juan Belman Ortiz of Mexico in 8:45:44. Christian Lagos was runner-up in 8:56:25. Luis Urbina (9:02:24) claimed third.
Top honors in the women’s 81k went to Canada’s Mandy Currie in 12:01:35. Karla Picard (13:01:19) finished second, and Lucero Abigaith Gomez Espindola (13:04:12) rounded out the women’s podium in third.

Ouachita Trail
Our third stop takes us to Little Rock, Arkansas, for the 35th edition of the Ouachita Trail 50k and 50-mile ultramarathons. Saturday’s 50k race saw Tatum Jacob race to victory in the women’s contest in 6:00:41. Jacob placed sixth overall. Meghan Lewis ran to an F2 and eighth overall finish in 6:03:23. Chelsey Buckles (6:23:07) claimed the final women’s podium spot in third.
John Muir cruised to victory in the men’s race and added a third Ouachita Trail 50k win in 4:42:41. Muir also won the race in 2008 and 2005. Tim Stachowski took second in 5:36:37. Patrick Zingerella (5:47:03) was third.

Whiskey Basin Trail Runs
We wrap things up in Prescott, Arizona, for the 11th running of the Whiskey Basin Trail Runs. This year’s event featured two ultramarathon distances: a point-to-point 92k race and a 60k race. Michael Versteeg crossed the line first in Saturday’s 92k with a winning time of 8:11:08. Jonah Blackstrom earned a second-place finish in 8:43:36. Jonathan Kuplack (8:51:35) finished third.
The women’s title went to Kate Taylor in 10:01:39. Taylor placed eighth overall. Natelia Horn took second in 10:33:37, and Carly Schweigert (11:09:49) secured third.
