With the increasing popularity of Fastest Known Times and the completion of more and more epic feats of human endurance, we thought it was time to properly recognize and honor this portion of the ultrarunning community. As with the Ultrarunners of the Year (UROY) process, which is led by John Medinger, we are fortunate to have an icon of the sport oversee and conduct this process for FKTs, Buzz Burrell.
Buzz and his FKT partner-in-crime Peter Bakwin developed a ballot with the most notable FKT performances from 2016, and they put it to a vote by a panel of FKT experts. Details about the rules, eligibility and voting criteria and guidelines will be published along with an in-depth article covering the inaugural FKTOY, written by Buzz, in the March issue of UltraRunning Magazine.
Similar to the UROY results, the FKTOY results will be released online at ultrarunning.com in a countdown format, starting with the fifth most notable FKTs by a woman and a man on February 13, and culminating with announcing the most notable FKTs on February 17.
This will be followed by a full feature report with details about each FKT, photos and an interview in the March issue of UltraRunning Magazine. If the FKTOY inspires you to undertake your own epic adventures, please be safe and respect the natural and wild places that make all of this possible.
