Winter temperatures are keeping many indoors right now, but our UltraRunning Calendar includes races that’ll bring runners back to the start line. The Coldwater Rumble kicks off Saturday in Arizona, along with the Dark Anchor in Georgia, Lake of the Woods 50k in Ohio and the Calico Trail Run in California.
The Coldwater Rumble takes place at Estrella Mountain Regional Park in Goodyear, Arizona, starting on Saturday, with ultra distances of 100 miles, 100k and 60k. Desert trails wind through the rugged Sierra Estrella mountain range. Runners in the 100-mile and 100k events will have 32 hours to finish, and winter weather typically includes highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. Registration is closed.
In Georgia, the Dark Anchor is a no DNF event. In its third year, runners have 34 hours to keep pace on a 3.5-mile, flat loop in Savannah. The start/finish includes aid station headquarters, with lunch and dinner provided. The race begins at 6 a.m. on Friday, January 19 at Wormsloe State Park, and Yeti Trail Runners provides custom medals for all runners and custom buckles for all 100-mile runners. Registration is closed.
Lake of the Woods 50k begins on Saturday in Farmersville, Ohio at Lake of the Woods Camp Grounds. The course loops through the woods and around the lake for 5k, and runners will complete 10 loops. To ensure runners stay warm, the race includes a bonfire, warm-up room and outdoor shelter that will include the aid station. There are 14 spots left and you can sign up here.
The 20th Calico Trail Run in Barstow, California, is a 50k on Sunday, January 21. Calico Ghost Town is a historic silver mining town 10 miles north of Barstow, and the course consists of runnable dirt roads and trails, and views of the Calico Mountains. Registration closes Friday.
