The Man Behind Barkley’s Live Updates
Keith Dunn’s X account (formerly Twitter) is an outsider’s window into the Barkley Marathons. Since 2009, Dunn has traveled to East Tennessee’s Frozen Head State Park to witness one of the most storied events in ultrarunning. From the campground located near the famed yellow gate, he posts real-time updates of the race as it progresses.
Loud Thunder 50: Pass the Pickle
Exactly 4 minutes and 20 seconds before the blast of the starting gun at the Loud Thunder 50 half marathon, a man in a pickle costume named “Pickle Phil” took off from the start line and sprinted into the woods. All the runners waiting for the gun knew the dill: Pass Pickle Phil in the first 2 miles and win $50.

Fast Times at MadCity Ultras
