In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we feature races in California, Idaho and Wisconsin, as well as several more ultramarathon results from throughout the US and Canada.
We start in San Diego, California, at the 23rd running of the San Diego 100 where hot temps contributed to a finisher rate of only 52%, with 134 runners completing the course under the 32-hour cutoff. Despite the conditions, Jesus Topete Jr still ran a sub-18-hour time (17:58:20) to claim a decisive win in the men’s race. Jesse Haynes placed second in 19:48:33, and George Torres finished third (20:25:52). On the women’s side, Alyssa Clark led wire to wire, winning in 21:19:08 and taking fifth overall. Elizabeth Shell finished second in 24:40:14, and Meghan McKinney rounded out the podium in third (26:33:17). Full results here.
Next, we head to LaGrange, Wisconsin, for the 27th annual Kettle Moraine 100 Endurance Runs (100-mile, 100k, 38-mile, and 50k). We start at the 100-miler where 152 runners earned their buckles by finishing under 30 hours. Top female honors went to Allisan Barrett who finished sixth overall in 19:04:47. Katherine Hunter placed second in 20:06:04, and Rachel Burke claimed third (21:17:46). In the men’s division, Brian Simonick took the overall win, running the fourth-fastest course time in 15:43:53. Alec Cline finished second (16:33:26), and Paul Hartwig placed third (18:29:00).
Dropping down to the 100k distance, Scott Wopata claimed the win in 9:42:32, Barrett Smith finished second (10:18:47), and Kevin Dockemeyer took third (10:30:54). Wendy Krause raced to first in the female division in 12:35:13, with Frayah Wasmund finishing second (13:02:22), and Deana Nyenhuis in third (13:47:02).
In the 38-mile race, Sarah Ohm came out on top in 9:04:58 (eighth overall), followed by Bekah Ekum in second (9:15:30 and tenth overall), and Willow Hoaglund in third (9:31:20). Brent Stefanich led the way for the men in 6:40:46. Matt Pearce claimed second (7:48:16), and Dan Soboleski placed third (8:04:10).
Last but not least, the 50k event saw 100 finishers led by Stephen Lavey in first (4:38:44), Michael Boehmer in second (4:55:36) and Nicholas Ethen in third (5:16:03). In the women’s event, Anna Patterson claimed the victory in 5:18:09 (fourth overall), Brenna Kirkpatrick finished just a second behind in 5:18:10 (fifth overall), and Hanna Brakarsh took third (5:38:50 and ninth overall). Finally, we travel to Pocatello, Idaho, for another race affected by this weekend’s “heat dome,” the Scout Mountain Ultras (100-mile, 50-mile and 50k). In the 100-mile race, Ian Farris battled the toasty conditions to win in 24:18:11. Eric Young took second in 25:40:16, and Josh Reddish completed the podium in third (25:44:33). Justine Hewitt took top honors for the females, winning in 28:48:17 (ninth overall). She was followed by Jen Swanson in second (30:46:27), and Marci Van Horn in third (32:00:28).
In the 50-mile event, Anna Fisher brought home the title in 9:53:49, breaking the previous course record and finishing fourth overall. Kristina Trygstad-Saari placed second in 10:20:54 (sixth overall and third-fastest course time), and Maria Guy finished third (11:16:07 and ninth overall). In the men’s race, Michael Postaski won in 9:28:38, followed by Seth Swanson (9:35:55) and Arlen Cornell (9:45:09).
Finally, in the 50k race, Tyler Fox ran a new course best to win in 5:05:50. Second place went to Zach Perrin in 5:10:49, and Gus Gibbs placed third (5:21:49). In the tightly contested women’s race, Kat Pagano was victorious in 6:07:53 (second-fastest course time), edging out Tara Dower by a mere 9 seconds (6:08:02). Codie Muthig finished third in 6:14:38.
