In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we drop in on races in California, West Virginia, Utah and Ontario. Click here for UltraRunning Magazine’s full list of results from this weekend’s action.
We begin in Olympic Valley, California, for the highly competitive Broken Arrow Skyrace. The three-day running event included several trail distances but just one ultra event, Saturday’s 46k race. In the men’s event, David Sinclair ran away from the field winning in 4:01:08, the third-fastest time on the new course. Last year’s runner-up Jeff Mogavero placed second again this year (4:11:39) and Adam Peterman finished just behind in third (4:12:31). In the women’s race, Toni Mccann of France took top honors, setting a new course mark to beat in 4:52:32. Klair Rhodes claimed second (5:07:19), and Amanda Basham rounded out the podium in third (5:16:05). Unofficially, it looks like an amazing 499 runners completed the challenging course in under the 12-hour cutoff. Full results here.
Our next stop takes us to America’s newest national park, West Virginia’s wild and wonderful New River Gorge, for the third running of the New River Gorge Trail Festival (50k). In the female race, HollyAnn Swann took over 50 minutes off the previous course best winning in a speedy 4:48:14 and taking fourth overall. Tracy Wu finished second and ninth overall (5:50:14), and Olivia Joseph claimed third (6:19:50). In the men’s event, Heath Goshorn also took down the previous course record winning in 4:31:25. Garrett Bowers placed second (4:41:43 and now second-fastest course time), and Lee Jarvis came away with third (4:47:58). In total, 81 runners finished the race. Full results here.
Back out west, we head to Monticello, Utah, for the Bears Ears Ultra (50-mile and 50k ultra distances). In the 50-mile race, there were 50 finishers led by Damon Chavez in first (7:34:01 and course record), Michael Carilli in second (8:07:06), and Ryan McAvoy in third (8:15:52). The top men all ran well under the previous course best. In the women’s race, Erin Park took home the win and finished fifth overall (8:40:59), followed by Kenedy Thorne (8:54:20 and seventh overall), and Anita Ortiz (9:19:18 and ninth overall). As with the men, all three women ran under the previous course record.
In the 50k race, 80 runners crossed the finish line with top female honors going to Madison Anderson in 7:09:43 (fifth overall). Kirah Aldinger-Gibson placed second (7:51:31), and Laura Kenderes claimed third (8:09:48). In the men’s race, Cal Seneker was victorious in 6:42:54, followed by Jacob Waldick in second (7:02:31), and Steven Lecey in third (7:05:52). Full results here.
For our final stop, we head north of the border to Mount Hope, Ontario, for the Sunburn Solstice Run, a unique event in which participants see how many 3-4k loops they can run during the 15 hours and 23 minutes of sunlight on the longest day of the year. On the men’s side, Mark Carey ran 123.92 kilometers to secure the win. Luke Rozga finished second (115.30 kilometers), and Alex Dos Santos took third (110.49). Charlotte Vasarhelyi ran the farthest for the women with 115.30 kilometers (second overall). Christine Ohlhausen placed second and fifth overall with 106.68 kilometers, and Selene Mallone claimed third (sixth overall, also with 106.68 kilometers but slower final lap finish time).
