REVIEW: Summer Flavors All Year Long

Our reviews are 100% organic. We do not accept payment for reviews or bundle with advertising budgets. In most cases, the brand is providing the product to our reviewers free of charge.

Summer is on its way out, but that doesn’t mean our taste buds can’t enjoy the flavors of the season. Upon their release last spring, these nutrition products helped propel us through heat training with their fruity flavors and summertime feel. With these in your training routine, it’ll be possible to enjoy summer all year long.

UnTapped Lime Mapleaid ($36.95 for a box of 20 single servings, $2.19 for a single serving packet)

As one of the latest flavors from UnTapped, the Lime Mapleaid became one of our go-to liquid hydration options due to its light citrus flavor that hits the spot when it comes to the perfect balance of sweet and sour – not too much of either. The thirst-quenching combination of organic lime juice, sea salt and organic maple syrup mixes with 16 oz of water for a total of 80 calories and 250 mg of sodium. While this was a favorite when training in the heat, we’ll be using this in all temperatures. Available at untapped.cc.

JamBar Tropical Trio ($36 for a box of 12)

For an easy snack on the trail, JamBars are perfect for their quality ingredients and flavor. They recently released their latest bar, Tropical Trio—a blend of pineapple, coconut and banana. This combo is a surprisingly light and fruity mix, and we found that all ingredients were equally balanced with each bite. JamBars are a mix of whole grains, nut butters and natural ingredients that combine for a soft, chewy bite—a texture that won’t harden in cold temps or melt in warm ones. Easy to stuff in a pack for your next trail adventure, Tropical Trio JamBars won’t transport you to the islands, but they’ll sure help you feel like it. Each bar has 240 calories. Available at jambar.com.

Tailwind Nutrition Dauwaltermelon with Lime ($39.99 for 50-serving bag, $28.99 for 30-serving bag or $2.49 for single-serving packets)

Previously released by Tailwind as a limited edition flavor, Dauwaltermelon Endurance Fuel was reintroduced this past May as a permanent flavor in the Tailwind lineup. As a nutrition brand, Tailwind offers endurance athletes a way to hydrate while also getting in calories and electrolytes in the same sip. Dauwaltermelon, as one might guess, is a watermelon flavor with a hint of lime to cut the sweetness. The result is a refreshing watermelon drink that goes down easy on a warm day—or, if you’re a watermelon fan like us, any day of the week. The name is just a happy coincidence, as Dauwalter was given numerous flavors to test and landed on watermelon as her favorite. Each serving has 100 calories and 310 grams of sodium. Available at tailwindnutrition.com.

GU Roctane Summit Tea Energy Drink Mix ($54 for 24-serving canister, $40 for box of 10 single servings)

Roctane is GU’s energy drink mix specifically formulated for longer sessions, harder workouts and bigger races. All four flavor options contain large doses of carbs and electrolytes, with each serving delivering 250 calories (60 g of carbs) and 320 mg of sodium plus key nutrients including BCAAs and an amino acid blend to keep your body functioning well. The Summit Tea flavor has been around for a while, for good reason. With a taste that’s something similar to black tea mixed with lemonade, the hint of bitterness with a mildly sweet finish is perfect on hot days, plus 35 mg of caffeine per serving will keep you alert. Available at www.guenergy.com.
