While researching ultramarathon results from this weekend, I can’t help but think about the volunteers that make these races possible. It can be easy to forget when we are sore, tired (perhaps even hallucinating) and so focused on getting to the finish line that we forget ultra events are no walk in the park for race volunteers, either. Many of whom have been on their feet for hours (or days) braving the elements and are just as sleep deprived and exhausted as the runners. I’m sure there has been a time or two when I forgot to say “thank you” or didn’t say it loud enough. So, I’d like to take that opportunity now and say “thanks” to all the volunteers who have helped me, as well as those who were out there this weekend helping runners achieve their goals. It wouldn’t be possible without all of you amazing folks. Now, onto this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap.
We start out west where the weather played a major role this weekend, with extreme winds cancelling races and making running (and volunteering) challenging, to say the least. This was the case in Utah at the Monument Valley 50k, where sandstorms and winds gusts well over 50 mph pushed runners to their limits. In the men’s race, Jason Schlarb took the win in 4:16:42, Michael Carilli placed second in 4:36:57 and Cameron Winters finished third (4:52:42). In the women’s race, Stephanie Allen took top honors in 6:08:32, Kristin McPhie finished second (6:18:49) and Rachael Christiansen rounded out the podium in third (6:24:13). Full results here.
Next we head to Pegram, Tennessee, for the Music City Trail Ultra 50k. For the women, Brooke Wanser took top honors in 5:40:20 (fourth-fastest time in course history), Teresa North came in second 6:40:31 and Haley Peel (6:43:15) notched third. In the men’s field, Michael Uhlig won in 4:37:00, followed by Cody Case in second (4:44:24) and Hoyle Whiteside in third (5:27:50). Full results here.
We drop down to Decatur, Alabama, for the Delano Park 12-hour and 50-mile races. In the 12-hour event, Wesley Ormond claimed the victory with 77 (one-mile) laps. Grant Benko finished second with 64 laps, and Kyle Wagner placed third, also with 64 laps. In the women’s race, Mica Anderson won with 59 laps, Amy Varga came in second (57 laps) and Perla Nunez took third (56 laps).
In the 50-mile race, Stacy Gagne finished first female and second overall in 9:07:59, with Briley Lovett taking second (11:36:57). On the men’s side, Ran Crump won in 8:44:18, Sergio De La Pena placed second (9:24:18) and Kamren McGovern (9:40:17) finished third. Full results here.
We end in Pickens, South Carolina, at the challenging Conquer the Rock 50k, where Petra Schober secured the win in 7:06:04, followed by Amy Gantt in second (7:20:19), and Margot Kelly-Hedrick in third (7:48:38). In the men’s field, Codie Pigott cruised to victory in 6:25:25, Josh Nelson came in second (6:37:33) and Gary Conner completed the podium in 6:40:53. Full results here.
Congratulations to everyone who raced this weekend, and please keep checking the UltraRunning Magazine results page as more results roll in. If you don’t see your results, please post them in the comments below.
