The Hungerford Trail Races
THE COURSE:
The Hungerford Trail Races offer an INCREDIBLE run through the woods on a beautiful fall day. The course winds through the scenic Manistee National Forest in northern Michigan. With 15-mile, 45K, and 50-mile distances, the event welcomes runners of all skill levels to enjoy the beauty of forested trails, winding single-tracks, and the always-memorable Powerlines. The course provides a perfect mix of challenging terrain and natural beauty, with aid stations thoughtfully spaced throughout. Whether you're an experienced trail runner or a newcomer looking for a unique challenge, the Hungerford Trail Races deliver an unforgettable adventure in one of Michigan's most stunning outdoor settings.
The footing is usually excellent, but there are areas where your ankles will thank you for slowing down and watching for rocks. Patches of sand will slow things down, but much of the course is pleasantly-packed dirt. However, THIS IS NOT A ROAD RACE.
The terrain will be challenging, and may be very challenging if the weather has been unusually wet or dry. Speedsters who have visions of blazing fast 50 mile times, may find the course not as cooperative as they think (if basing things solely on the elevation profile). However, many ultra runners over the years have used Hungerford as their first 50-mile venture, and/or have set PRs here.
The Hungerford course is a pleasant mixture of forest roads, two-tracks, single-track, power lines, and gravel road - with some pavement/road shoulder at the start and finish.
