Mongolia Sunrise to Sunset

Hatgal, Hovsgol
100 KM

Registration is now open for the Mongolia Sunrise to Sunset (MS2S) 2026 ultra trail race, one of the world’s most beautiful and remote endurance events — and among Asia’s oldest trail ultras, founded in 1999. Runners from around the globe can now secure their place at ms2s.org and take advantage of early bird prices available until December 31, 2025.

Held in the awe-inspiring Lake Hovsgol National Park, MS2S takes runners on a 42km or 100km journey through forest trails, open steppe, and mountain ridges overlooking the vast blue lake. With Mongolian horsemen assisting along the route and yaks grazing nearby, every step captures the spirit of Mongolia’s wild beauty.

A Week of Exploration

MS2S offers much more than a single day of running. Over the course of a week, runners immerse themselves in Mongolian culture — connecting with local herders and families, sleeping in gers beneath star-filled skies, and exploring the vast wilderness surrounding Lake Hovsgol.

“Lake Hovsgol is one of Mongolia’s great natural treasures,” notes MS2S Race Director Nicolas Musy. “Through the race, we aim to preserve the park’s ecosystem while empowering local residents to continue their unique way of life.”

The course is as challenging as it is beautiful: The 42km marathon includes about 1,400 meters of elevation gain, while the 100km ultra covers roughly 2,120 meters. With a generous 18-hour cutoff time for both distances, marathon participants have plenty of time to complete the course, ensuring that everyone with determination and proper preparation can cross the finish line and experience the full beauty of this remarkable race.

A Race with Purpose

MS2S is a non-profit event, with 100% of proceeds supporting environmental and community projects in Lake Hovsgol National Park. The NGOs ecoLeap Foundation and Ecodevshilt, both founded by the MS2S organizers, cooperate with the Global Nature Fund to promote environmental education and sustainable tourism, empower local communities, preserve the nomadic lifestyle and culture, and to reduce waste and support recycling. Over 207 tons of solid waste has been removed to date.

Recognized Among the World’s Most Remarkable Trail Ultras

Regularly listed among the most remarkable and beautiful trail races worldwide, Mongolia Sunrise to Sunset is celebrated for its unspoiled natural beauty, cultural authenticity, and strong environmental mission. The event is also a member of the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) and an official partner of the Asia Trail Master series.

Runners seeking a challenge that combines physical endurance, cultural discovery, and a purpose-driven mission are invited to register now and experience the spirit of Mongolia’s ultimate trail adventure.
