Coos to Cape

Ultra scenic road running on the southern Oregon Coast
Follow in the footsteps of Steve Prefontaine

  • Starts and ends at 7 Devils Brewery
  • Rolling hills in town and along the coast (~2000 feet total elevation gain, but no hill over 200 feet)
  • Support yourself with mini markets, a Dairy Queen, and state parks along the way
  • 95% paved, 5% wide gravel road, unless you choose to venture onto the Cape Arago trails that parallel the roads
  • Could be in beautiful sun, could rain for six hours... that's Oregon!

First 5 miles
Meet up at the public parking area next to 7 Devils Brewery, under the Steve Prefontaine mural. Head out of town on Ocean Blvd on sidewalks, heading to the Empire neighborhood where you meet up with the Cape Arago Highway and turn south.

Second 5 miles
Roll along the Cape Arago Highway on its shoulder/bike path. The mouth of Coos Bay looms to the west. Dairy Queen if you need a mid-ultra Blizzard or chicken tenders. The docks of Charleston await at mile ~9 with more market/cafe/restaurant options and a public restroom as you head out of town. You'll skip the Highway for a bit to get onto Chicken Loop Rd towards Bastendorff Beach, a more scenic alternative with less traffic, a bit of gravel, and another beachside bathroom option.

Third 5 miles
From Bastendorff Beach, rejoin the Cape Arago Highway and cruise past Lighthouse Beach, Sunset Beach, and Shore Acres State Park. Traffic lightens up and you get gorgeous peeks of ocean cliffs and drifting sounds of barking seals. Runners CAN choose to detour onto the Cape Arago trails at several points here -- the published route and 50km distance is based on sticking on the road, but you can help yourself to a "long-cut" if you'd like. Turn around at Cape Arago State Park (has a couple port-a-pottys but no water available) then retrace your route back to downtown Coos Bay and the brewery awaiting you at the finish line.
