Congratulations to everyone who ran one of the 60 races on this weekend’s UltraRunning Magazine race calendar, and a shoutout to all the amazing volunteers who helped push them toward the finish line. In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we travel to Indiana, Ohio, California and Oregon. Let’s see what unfolded on the trails.
We begin in Albion, Indiana, for the Indiana Trail 100 (100-mile, 75-mile and 50-mile races). In the 100-mile event, Evan Perigo took top honors in 15:54:44, the fourth-fastest time in the race’s 12-year history. Brandon Shiflett finished second male in 16:23:00, and Eric Davis (16:49:01) placed third. In the women’s race, Brenda Johnson won in 21:02:16. Morgan Benoit took second (22:36:51), and Alessandra Lembo (23:44:31) rounded out the podium in third. Winners in the other race distances included Lindsey Welty (f) and Kevin Rook (m) in the 50-miler, and Damon Greven (m) and Kirsten Bader (f) in the 75-miler. Next, we head to Akron, Ohio, for the eighth annual Canal Corridor 100-Mile Endurance Run. Known for producing fast times, this year’s event lived up to its reputation. In the women’s race, Allison Rosen took the win and finished fifth overall in a speedy time of 15:57:53, the second-fastest female course time ever. Stephanie Campbell finished as runner-up in 17:47:17, and Mary Dillhoff (18:33:43) claimed third. In the men’s event, Matt Parker took home the win completing the out-and-back course in 14:01:16. Brian Zickefoose finished second-place male in 14:44:32, and Justin Ladner (15:36:13) ran his way to third. Full results here.
Heading west, we travel to Big Bear Lake, California, for the Kodiak Ultra Marathons (100-mile, 100k and 50k). Kristina Chang earned the win in the women’s 100-mile race in 21:15:24, running the second-fastest time in race history (just 5 minutes off the course record). Second-place Coral Buitenhuis finished just behind in 21:29:51 (third-fastest course time), and Kate Butcher (22:14:23) took third. In a tightly contested men’s race, Sam Wood came out on top in 18:24:08 (third-fastest course time). Mike Lavery finished second (18:27:19), and Cordis Hall (18:31:33) snagged third. In the 100k race, Michelle Buncke (f) and Nick Hirdt (m) were victorious, while Ryan Becker (m) and Helen Mino Faukner (f) led the way in the 50k. Results from all three races here.
Finally, we travel to the beautiful Columbia River Gorge in Cascade Locks, Oregon, for the inaugural Angel’s Rest 50k. In the men’s race, Christopher Jones and Eli Nixon battled it out, with Jones crossing the finish line first in 4:26:19 and Nixon finishing just behind in second (4:27:07). Steve Van Knotsenburg (5:08:52) claimed third. Ashley Figel led the way for the women, winning in 5:09:46 and placing fifth overall. Tracy Steele finished second female and ninth overall (5:40:42), and Leanna Monteleone (5:57:06) took third. Full results here.
