It’s not officially summer, but June is already bringing the heat to our Ultra Weekend Recap. A decade-old course record was broken at the San Diego 100, a down-to-the-wire battle at the Marin Ultra Challenge, results from the historic Mohican 100 in Ohio and more.
Makai Clemons from San Diego, California, was featured in our February 2023 UltraRunners to Watch article and continues to blow us away. On Friday, June 2, at Lake Cuyamaca in California, Clemons beat Jeff Browning’s 2012 San Diego 100 course record by just under 10 minutes in 16 hours, 27 minutes and 2 seconds. Michelle Buncke from Portland, Oregon, won for the women in 22 hours, 7 minutes and 51 seconds. Both were running their debut 100-mile races. Clemons reported that the weather was ideal, saying, “Temperatures were only in the mid-70s or so, but UV index was closer to 90. Overall, pretty good weather historically.” Casey Weinman of Eugene, Oregon, came in second in the men’s race in 19 hours, 55 minutes and 10 seconds. Third went to Ignacio Castro Valenzuela from Ensenada, Mexico, in 21 hours, 19 minutes and 32 seconds. On the women’s side, Rachel Biber-Brewer of Golden, Colorado, came in second in a time of 23 hours, 46 minutes and 13 seconds. Meghan Slavin out of Phoenix, Arizona, was third in 23 hours, 53 minutes and 9 seconds. Full results available here.
At the rescheduled Marin Ultra Challenge 50-miler on Saturday, June 3, Canhua Luo from Lijiang, China, triumphed over Dylan Bowman of San Rafael, California, by less than 2 minutes in 7 hours, 19 minutes and 56 seconds. Bowman came through in a time of 7 hours, 21 minutes and 42 seconds. Third went to Grant Hotaling out of Healdsburg, California, in 7 hours, 25 minutes and 51 seconds. San Francisco’s Pauline Loulier won for the women in 8 hours, 40 minutes and 9 seconds. She was followed by Sarah O’Brien from Berkeley, California, in 9 hours, 33 minutes and 16 seconds. Aden St. Charles of Chattanooga, Tennessee, came in third in 10 hours, 43 minutes and 29 seconds. Full 50-mile results here and the accompanying 50k results here.
In Loudonville, Ohio, at the 34th Mohican 100-miler (and accompanying 50-miler), Christine Partain from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, won in 21 hours, 38 minutes and 1 second. Lee Conner of Cleveland, Ohio, came in second in 23 hours, 10 minutes and 8 seconds, and Laura Stanley from Marysville, Ohio, rounded out the women’s podium in 23 hours, 34 minutes and 6 seconds. For the men, James Solomon of Villa Park, Illinois, won in a time of 17 hours, 2 minutes and 49 seconds, Chad Trumbo from Columbus, Ohio, was the runner-up in 18 hours, 33 minutes and 5 seconds, and Tom Myers out of Wolcottville, Indiana, took third in 18 hours, 59 minutes and 27 seconds.
