The first weekend of 2025 saw 20 ultramarathons take place across North America. In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we feature results from Arizona, West Virginia, Maryland and California. Let’s see who rang in the New Year with podium finishes.
Leading off, we head to Queen, Arizona, for the 14th running of the San Tan Scramble (50k). This year’s event had 41 finishers, led by Jordan Bramblett who set a new course record and took the win in 3:30:49. Keegan Oldani placed second (3:53:51), and Ian Stuart (4:16:33) rounded out the podium in third. In the women’s race, three ladies cracked the top ten overall, with Sydney Park securing the victory and finishing fourth overall in 4:55:16. Ana Wilson claimed second female and fifth overall (4:55:39), and Shae Regan (5:14:33) took third and ninth overall. Full results here.
Next up, we check in on the 15th annual Frozen Sasquatch (50k) in Charleston, West Virginia. There were 49 runners who crossed the finish line ahead of the 9-hour cutoff time, with first-place female honors going to Katherine Felton in 5:40:13 (fifth overall). Leslie Starnes finished second woman and seventh overall (5:44:24), and Michelle Gray (6:02:13) came in third. William Ross paced the way for the men, winning in 4:53:14. Anthony Vargo placed second (5:06:35), and Brandon Perry (5:32:36) finished third. Full results here.
Over at Rockburn State Park in Elkridge, Maryland, results show that 62 runners completed the 14th annual Mid-Maryland Trail Event 50k. In the female competition, Samantha Merkel raced to victory and smashed the course record by over 12 minutes. Merkel finished sixth overall. Jessica Honeycutt was second woman (5:10:41), and Shobha Sidigonde (5:14:46) took third. In men’s race, Patrick Blair ran a crazy fast time of 3:27:58 to take the win, missing the course record by a mere 43 seconds. Nicholas Wirz came in second (3:37:55), and Chris Heydrick (3:47:48) ran to third. Full results here.
Finally, we journey to Escondido, California, for the fourth annual Del Dios Trail Race 50k, where Marie Young stole the show by taking the overall win and setting a new female course record in 4:16:33. Anna Curtid places second woman in 5:27:11, and Sam Cvetkovski (5:33:58) completed the podium in third. Dan Friedman crossed the finish line first for the men in 4:1818. Clement Boinot snagged second (4:26:53), and Travis Gibson (4:35:20) took third. Full results here.
