Ultra Weekend Recap — April 20

The third weekend of April saw 38 ultramarathons on the UltraRunning Magazine race calendar, with featured events in Indiana, North Carolina, New Mexico and Colorado.

Knobstone 50

Our first stop is in Borden, Indiana, for the inaugural Knobstone 50, where runners tackled 10,000 feet of elevation gain over a 50-mile point-to-point race course. Walker Yane paced the way in the men’s contest, winning in 9:29:50 and establishing a new course mark to beat for future competitors. Andrew Walker ran to second (10:26:36), and Alex Mitevski (10:51:50) came in third. On the women’s side, Lauren Hendrickson (eighth overall) crossed the line first in 12:05:06. Jessica Bryzek (14:38:28) finished second female, and Nicole Pence (14:41:58) rounded out the podium in third. Full results here.

Weymouth Woods

Up next, we travel south to Southern Pines, South Carolina, and the Weymouth Woods -Sandhills Nature Preserve for the Weymouth Woods 50k. There were 36 runners who completed this year’s event, with top female honors going to Anna Zaccaria in 5:02:57, good for second overall and the third-fastest women’s time in race history. Chelsea Hancock took second and eighth overall (5:41:52), and Alyssa Miller (6:06:27) claimed third. Daniel Singer earned the overall win in 4:55:00. Kamren Steward was the second man to finish in 5:07:43 and Ken Bell (5:17:53) was third. Full results here.

Capitan Mountain 34-Hour Race

Heading southwest, we check in on the second running of the Capitan Mountain 34-Hour, a timed ultra held in Capitan, New Mexico, which is the birthplace of Smokey Bear. There were 92 runners who started Friday’s race, with 41 entrants earning their 80-mile Smokey’s 80th birthday buckle, and 21 runners completing at least 100 miles for an additional 100-mile buckle. The top three women all logged 104 miles, with Julia Ford finishing her laps the quickest. Lillian Martinez was second to finish, and Rebekah Garcia came in third. Ephraim Ford was the only man to log 104 miles, followed by Jason Stambook and Antonio Portillo, both with 100 miles. Rattler Trail Race

Our final stop takes us to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for the Rattler Trail Race. There were 47 runners who completed the 50k course through Palmer Park, led by Jacob Cordell in 4:46:02. Matthias Fuchs was the second male across the line in 5:00:24. Chris Mitola snagged the last podium spot in 5:04:33. It was 60-year-old Anita Ortiz who won the women’s race and finished ninth overall in an impressive time of 5:52:24. Shelby Farrell placed second female (6:06:29), and Jessica Klein (6:45:22) snagged third. Full results here.
